A WALK FOR HUMANITY -PUNAM KARMACHARYA

JAPAN 2021-MAY18

Punam Karmacharya, 24, of Bhaktapur is busy nowadays.

As the number of deaths due to Corona infection increases, she is getting busy. If someone dies from corona virus infection at Bhaktapur District Hospital or district-wide 'home-isolation', then Punam's work begins.
Punam's workload is increasing as the lives and diaries of the common people are becoming hectic. Nearly 200 people have been dying daily across the country in the last two weeks. There is no place to keep patients in any hospital. Thousands are infected every day.
Physicians are issuing the message - avoid infection, stay indoors as much as possible.
The reason is that the new species has spread terror in the world directly through air. Despite this, the deceased has to be buried, but no one is able to have close contact even relatives. All survivors have to protect their lives themselves as oxygen is lacking drastically and medical treatment is hard to get eventhough we are able to afford.
In order to save all the living beings, there is space inside the house. If someone dies in Corona across Bhaktapur, a team of two young women, Poonam and Jina, will be deployed to 'pack' the corpses without spreading the infection.
 Punam and Jiya's di
ary is to handle death bodies of covid19. At first, Punam was alone. With Jiya, it has become easier for Punam.
Punam is the communication officer of the Rescue and Awareness (RNA-16) team. RNA-16 has 11 members.2 of the girls, Punam and Jiya, are involved in body management. RNA-16 not only spreads public awareness but also collects swabs as per need of patient.
 Who is Punam?
Punam is a young woman who has studied nursing. Currently studying Medical Management, she has done Nursing at Proficiency Certificate level from Khwopa Polytechnic Institute, Bhaktapur.
After finishing nursing, she is working in social security unit of Bhaktapur Hospital . Meanwhile, the world was plagued by the Corona epidemic.Ater earthquake2015, she joined RNA-16. Then began her social work.
โ€˜Working as a nurse, I understand the essence of the patient in need." she said. After the outbreak of the pandemic, many people are in the verge of needing help . When the first wave of Corona started, the awareness campaign in front of Bhaktapur Hospital did not even gave her time to go home for three months. Corona risked her life to serve the people.
Basically, in the Newari community, daughters are not allowed to see the corpse and go to Malami. She was also scared to see the corpse in the early days. Punam said, โ€˜At first I was scared when I saw the body. I have got used to it while working. Probably, self esteem help me out a lot with the positive energies from my family . "
 Leading the corpse management
A pregnant woman of Sindhupalchowk has died at Dhulikhel Hospital on June 20.
Until then, it was not clear who would bury the body of the corona infected in Nepal. Luckily, RNA16 got a chance to explore the trainings through collaboration with army, police, apf and other concern departments.
For the first time in Nepal, Punam's group dared to manage the body of a corona infected. Punam said that she started the management of the body from there.
Punam was fearless from her childhood. Sh is also a kickboxer. So she did not look weaker than the boy.

One year of dedication has changed his identity. Now her identity is not limited to 'nurse', she has also been established as a social worker. Many have come to know her as a 'social worker girl'.
 Hard suffering
Punam has to face many difficulties in terms of social work. In the beginning, his family did not allow him. The toll society also made negative comments.
The first wave of Corona did not return home for long. Her team had set up a tent in the Bhaktapur hospital area. At that time, she had heard some relatives' worries and comments about 'deteriorating', but she persevered.
Punam and her group have been setting up tents in front of Bhaktapur Hospital since last year's coronation period to raise awareness among the public.
 Punam's diary
Now Punam goes home but can reach the hospital at 6 in the morning.
He and his friends arrive at the scene with the news of Corona's death. They manage the corpses at their own risk. The body managed by them is buried by an army team.
She has four girls and six boys in her group. Among them, Punam has been playing a key role in the management of the bodies of the infected.
As soon as she gets the news of the death of the infected person, she takes risks and manages the body with her friends, she said. This is how his diary is going on now. She says she packed about dozen bodies after second wave of covid19.She believes " Humanity is the greatest religion a mankind worship."
